On December 3rd 1999 in Worcester Massachusetts 6 firefighters lost their lives. A lot has been said and I am far from eloquent enough to even attempt to put into words something better.

I will just say that I was very young when this fire occurred. I was only a few weeks from my 18th birthday and had only been in the fire service a short time (almost three years) and it was the first LODD that I actually paid attention to. I then went on to college and got to meet people from that area and talk to them about it, got to go to my first FDIC and talk to guys who helped search the rubble for the 6. While all LODD’s are tragic this one has always been something a little more to me, along the same lines as 9/11 as one that really made you realize the sacrifice, and the dangers of what we do.

So take some time to day to read about the Worcester 6. If your on shift share it with your crew. Honor the memory of these heroes and learn from this tragedy.
