This video shows a quick and simple way to rescue a fireman from an upper floor. The beautiful part of this skill is that it only takes basic firemanship skills to accomplish.
I have done this way and it works very well. If you have a big enough carabiner and a pretied 8 on a bite you can attach the carabiner to the rung and then attach the rope to it. That takes a step out of having to tie a knot under pressure, at the top of a ladder, while trying to rescue a brother.
I have also done a variation that is even simple were you simply just weave the rope in and out of the rungs while you climb up, using the ladder as a friction device (like a rappel rack). Even with small diameter rope enough friction is created to safely lower 1 fireman. The only negative is that this method does not assist with lifting as the method in the video shows, but it is simpler since the only knot you have to tie is the 8 on a bite and attach the carabiner.
No matter what you are doing, you have to get out there and practice it!
If any of you out there have any other methods please share them! If you take pictures of your crews training I will put them up on the site.
